The race for the semifinals has started. Four contenders from the White Group of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals 2016 Singapore could make it to the next round. Svetlana Kuznetsova, defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska, Karolina Pliskova and Garbine Muguruza play their respective round-robin matches on Wednesday and will be hoping to achieve the feat.
Only two players will be making it to the knockout stages.
While Kuznetsova, who is in a superb form after getting past the fiery Radwanska in her opening match of the tournament this season, takes on Czech Republic's Pliskova in the first match of Wednesday, Radwanska takes on Muguruza in the second match.
If both Kuznetsova and Radwanska win their matches, the Russian qualifies for the semifinals and Muguruza will get eliminated. In the case of Pliskova and Muguruza winning their respective matches, the Czech makes it to the semifinals, while defending champion Radwanska will be out.
Kuznetsova recorded a thrilling win over Radwanska in her previous match, which took place for over two hours. Her haircut in the middle of the match also earned her brownie points, apart from the match. The Russian's opponent Pliskova, however, has been dominant with her aces. The Czech tennis player notched 14 aces as she got past Spain's Muguruza in her opening match of the tournament.
In the second match, both Radwanska and Muguruza are coming at the back of defeats and judged on their recent performances, it is the Polish glam-girl who has the clear advantage in the match against the Spaniard. Interestingly, Muguruza leads Radwanska 4-3 in the overall head to head record.
The first match of the day between Pliskova and Kuznetsova gets under way at 7.30 pm Singapore Time (5 pm IST) on October 26. This will be followed by the match between Radwanska and Muguruza.
