Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science is the only Indian institute to feature in the top 500 universities list by ShanghaiRankings Consultancy. The position of the university remains unchanged from the previous year.

Among the top 10 universities are Harvard, Stanford, University of California, Berkley; Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton, Oxford, California Institute of Technology, Columbia University and University of Chicago. The top 10 universities remain unchanged from 2015 as well.

Of the top 10 universities, eight are from the United States and two are from United Kingdom. There is only one Asian university in the top 20 -- University of Tokyo.

There are 126 universities from the Asia/Oceania region among the top 500 and only 98 in the top 400. Among top 100, there are only 20 universities from the region.

The US has the maximum number of universities with 137, followed by China (54), Germany (38), UK (37), Australia (23), France (22), Canada (19), Japan (16), and Switzerland (8).

There are only five universities from the Africas, while Europe has the maximum number of universities in the top 500 at 204.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) was ranked as the best university in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), which released its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in April. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), IISC is among 301-400, which implies there are that many institutes ranked above it.

The academic institutions are ranked on the basis of quality of education, quality of faculty, research output, per capital performance among others. The rank of a university depends on the number of institutions ranked above it.
