They say records are meant to be broken. And London Olympics saw lots of world records being broken in various events. Over a dozen records have been broken so far, at the time of filing this story.

Here is the list and photos of world record breakers at London Olympics 2012:

Swimming
The American team of Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt won Olympic gold in women's 4x100m medley relay with a world record time of 3: 52.05, bettering the previous record of 3:52.19 set by China. 

Weightlifting
Zhou Lulu, weightlifter from China, created a new world record in the women's +75 kg category at the the 2012 Summer Olympics by lifting a total of 333 kg. She broke her own world record of 328 kg in the snatch, and clean and jerk.

Swimming
Rebecca Soni of the United States set a new world record in the women's 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:19.59 seconds.

Weightlifting
Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstan sets a new world record in the Men's 94kg weightlifting by lifting 233 kilograms in the clean and jerk. His total of 418 kilograms from the snatch and clean and jerk was also a world record.

Cycling
British team of Sir Chris Hoy, Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny set a new world record in the Team Sprint. They completed their three-lap in 42.600 seconds, beating their own record of 42.747.

Weightlifting
Xiaojun Lu of China set a new world record by lifting a total of 379 in the Men's 77kg weightlifting. 

Cycling
Gong Jinjie and Guo Shuang of China set world record women's Team Sprint Track Cycling with a time of 32.422 seconds. They broke their own 32.447 seconds record they posted in the qualification round.

Swimming
Daniel Gyurta of Hungary set a new world record with a time of 2:07.28 in 200 metre breaststroke.

Weightlifting
 Kim Un Guk of Democratic People's Republic of Korea set a world record in the Men's 62kg category with a total of 327 kg. He also tied the World Record in the snatch with 153 kg.

Swimming
Dana Vollmer of the United States won gold in the women's 100m Butterfly at the London Olympics. She set a new world record time of 55.98 seconds in the event.

Weightlifting
Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan set a new world record in the women's 53kg weightlifting in the clean and jerk by lifting 131 kg.

Swimming
Ye Shiwen of China broke the world record held by Stephanie Rice in the women's 400m Individual Medley by clocking 4:28.43.

Archery
Im Dong Hyun of Korea set a new world record score of 699 during the Archery men's individual ranking round.

Swimming
Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa won gold in the men's 100m Breastsroke at the London Olympics. He set a new world record time of 58.46 seconds.

Shooting
Jessica Rossi of Italy set a world record in the women's trap with a score of 99 out of 100 shots at the London Olympics.
