The World Environment Day, observed since 1973 to create global awareness on the importance of conserving mother Earth, is celebrated on June 5 every year. The theme for this environment day is "Go Wild For Life - Zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade."

With this theme, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) encourages each one of us to fight against the illegal trade in wildlife and to help safeguard species under threat for future generations.

Angola in Africa is the host country of the environment day this year. "Angola is delighted to host World Environment Day, which will focus on an issue close to our hearts. The illegal wildlife trade, particularly the trade in ivory and rhino horn, is a major problem across our continent. By hosting this day of celebration and awareness-raising, we aim to send a clear message that such practises will soon be eradicated," Angolan Environment Minister Maria de Fatima Jardim said, according to the official website of UNEP.
