Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has said it is exciting times, after Jose Mourinho was announced as the new manager of the club. The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss was confirmed as the new United manager on 27 May.

Rooney said: It is exciting, [he is] one of the best managers in the world and he obviously knows the Premier League very well. For myself and for the other Manchester United players, it is exciting times, so Im looking forward to it.

Mourinho replaces Louis van Gaal as boss of the Red Devils, despite the Dutchman winning the FA Cup final in his last game in charge. Van Gaal was widely expected to be sacked after a lacklustre campaign that saw United lose out on Champions League qualification to their bitter rivals Manchester City.

The 53-year-old has been given a three-year deal by United. On his appointment, vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: José is quite simply the best manager in the game today.

Mourinho won three Premier League titles during his spells in charge of Chelsea, with his last coming in the 2014/15 campaign. He was, however, sacked by the London club in December 2015 after a dismal defence of their Premier League crown.

Rooney was speaking ahead of Englands Euro 2016 warm up game against Portugal on 3 June. The 30-year-old will lead his country during the competition in France, where they face Russia, Wales and Slovakia in Group B.
