Heading into the abyss, the Gimbal is a drone that can venture where humans dare not go. Its makers recently partnered with a mountain-rescue team to explore ice caves in the Swiss Alps. Protected by a shock-absorbing elastic frame, it bounces off obstacles as it navigates the narrow crevasse. The gyroscopic stabilisation system built into the drone keeps it on course, despite the bumpy ride.

Although an impossible task for many other drones, the Gimbal was able to swoop 10m down into the chasm and return safely back to the surface. Dronemaker Flyability say the Gimbals unique protective cage means that it is also safe to fly around people, which could make it a vital new tool for search and rescue missions.
