The 'Indian-American Muslim kid' (as he described himself) took a dig at the US President for not attending the gala. "This has been one of the strangest events I've ever done in my life," the Daily Show correspondent said in his set.

Minhaj also trained guns on Trump's bizarre tweeting habit. "He tweets at 3 AM... sober. Who is tweeting at 3 AM sober? Donald Trump, because it's 10 AM in Russia. Those are business hours!"

"I would say it's an honor to be here, but that would be an alternative fact. No one wanted to do this, so of course it lands in the hands of an immigrant. No one wanted this gig. Don Rickles died just so you wouldn't ask him to do this gig."

He added: "The man who tweets everything that enters his head, refuses to acknowledge the amendment that allows him to do it."

"I don't have a solution. You guys [CNN] have to be more perfect now. You are how the president gets his news. Not from advisors, not from experts, not from intelligence agencies. You guys. You can't make ay mistakes. When one of you messes up, he blames the whole group. Now you know what it feels like to be a minority."

Minhaj added: "Only in America can a first-generation Indian-American Muslim kid come on stage and make fun of the president."

He signed off his set saying: "In four hours Donald Trump will be tweeting about how badly Nicki Minaj bombed at this dinner." He later took to Twitter to share the joke with his followers.

His act also touched upon some serious issues like free speech, minority issues and Muslim ban in America.
