Score a few more runs, set a big target and then let the bowlers do what they have done all series will be the India plan going into Day 4 of the fourth Test match against South Africa at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

India decided against pressing the accelerator on day three of this Test match, instead playing solidly and making sure the lead would bulge slowly but surely.

They have their two best batsmen in Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease, with both players past 50, and the plan should be to go into one-day mode once they see off the early half-hour of the day on Sunday.

South Africa looked jaded and just-put-us-out-of-our-misery towards the end of day three on Saturday, but what the number one Test team in the world will want to do is show some fight, get those six wickets that are necessary to get batting again, and then play out of their skins to at the very least make this a contest.

The South Africa batting have been awful in this Test series, and even if the series is already lost, the least the batsmen can do is make this fourth match a contest. The target will undoubtedly be big – it already is 403, with India on 190/4 – and while a victory might seem out of the picture already, the least South Africa can do is make India work for their victory.

Take it to day five and ensure that we finally see a proper contest.
