Volkswagen will soon be launching the diesel variant of its Ameo compact sedan in India. The company has already started testing the Ameo diesel on the Indian roads. It has been caught on camera quite a few times.

The Ameo diesel is expected to be launched in the country during the festive season this year. There have also been reports that the diesel version of the compact sedan could also come as early as in August. Volkswagen Ameo is currently offered only in petrol options.

In the diesel engine version, the Ameo will get upgraded 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine, which is expected to be re-tuned to churn out 108bhp of power. There will be no change in terms of style and features.

The Ameo, which is currently on sale in India, comes powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder MPI petrol engine that develops 74bhp of power and 110Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to 5-speed manual gear box. The compact sedan comes packed with the best in-class features, such as cruise control, infotainment system with CD/MP3/USB/AUX-in/SD card and Bluetooth connectivity, reverse-parking camera, reverse-parking sensors and touchscreen MirrorLink system. It has been priced starting at Rs. 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Ameo is the company's made-in-India, made-for-India compact sedan. Offered in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline variants, the Ameo offers dual front airbags and ABS as standard. It competes against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent in the country.
