Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal, who was hopitalised in critical condition in Gurgaon, died at 2:20pm on Tuesday.

The 89-year-old, who was suffering from heart and kidney problems, was admitted to Medanta - The Medicity Hospital.

The VHP leader was kept on life support system in the Intensive Care Unit.

Though Singhal was referred to the same hospital on 20 October, he was discharged after his condition improved. However, he was again brought back on Friday night as his condition deteriorated.

Singhal served as VHP president for 20 years. After graduating in Metallurgical Engineering from Benaras Hindu University Institute of Technology in 1950, he became a full-time pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He became VHP joint general secretary in 1980 and general secretary in 1984. Later, he became working president of the outfit and quit the position in 2011 due to health issues.
