Veteran actress Manjula Vijayakumar passed away in Chennai on Tuesday morning. She was 59.

The yesteryear actress was admitted to Sri Ramachandra Medical Center, Porur, Chennai, following a stomach injury. She breathed her last at 11:40 in the morning. Manjula is survived by her actor-husband Vijayakumar, daughters Vanitha, Preetha and Sridevi.

Manjula entered the Tamil film industry as a child artiste in "Shanti Nilayam". She bagged a lead role in MGR's 'Rickshawkaran" (1971). After the success of this film, Manjula appeared as the leading lady with big stars during the late seventies and then began playing supporting roles in the 80s. The actress has acted in more than 100 films in various south Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

As the news of the actress' unfortunate death emerged, several film celebrities took to Twitter to pay their last respects.
