Commuters using London Waterloo train station are facing delays of up to an hour after an overnight fire torched signalling equipment at Vauxhall station. Five out of eight main lines are closed near where the fire ignited and a very limited service is operating.
Clapham Junction was shut as a result of increased passenger numbers looking to make their way into or out of the city. Firefighters were called to the south London station at 2.39am (Thursday, 5 May) to tackle a track-side fire that burned signalling cabling. The power was isolated and firefighters remain at the scene.
London Fire Brigade Station Manager John Ryan said: Once the power was isolated firefighters quickly got to work to tackle the fire . Were currently assessing how much cabling has been affected and damping down pockets of fire. The fire will impact on travel this morning and wed ask people to check before they travel.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
