A "The Vampire Diaries" writer sent Delena fandom into frenzy over the weekend when he used a ring emoji to describe what's in store for the couple on Thursday's episode.
As "The Vampire Diaries" fans know, things have been going pretty well for Damon and Elena, and the next step forward in their relationship would be an engagement. But with all the drama that's happening around them, it is a sure thing that the engagement -- if at all it comes to that – will be a peaceful one.
Responding to a fan's question on what Delena will go through in the episode titled "A Bird in a Gilded Cage," writer Neil Reynolds tweeted:

Fans were quick to notice the ring in the emojis, and speculation on the possible Delena engagement soon took the internet by storm. But there appears to be a catch, as the rest of the emojis hint at a tragedy as well.
The next episode will see Damon and Elena travelling back to 1903 to find out the truth about his mom, and there's a possibility it might end in tragedy as one of the emojis is of a skull.
This is indeed sad news, considering Elena and Damon have been in a good place recently. Sadly, actor Somerhalder does not see a future for Damon and Elena.
Meanwhile, actress Nina Dobrev opened up about playing Elena Gilbert, and said she really enjoys essaying the character, especially now, as Elena is now neither a victim nor a villain.
"Elena's sort of in this middle ground right now," Nina explained to E!Online. "Things are going really well with her and Damon. Everyone else around her is sort of falling apart, but she's for the first time keeping it together."
"It's fun for me to play her light like that because everything is so heavy on our show. But at the same time you always want what you don't have so as soon as I go light, I want to go dark again," she added.
