Kat Graham's "The Vampire Diaries" character Bonnie hasn't had a serious romantic interest since her return from Kai's prison world in season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries".

Although many expected Ian Somerhalder's Damon to consider a romantic relationship with Bonnie in season 6, it did not materialise, as Elena soon got back with Damon. But there's now scope for "Bamon" to happen as Elena is not actively involved in Damon's life, thanks to the sleeping spell Kai cast on her.

As "The Vampire Diaries" fans already know, Elena won't be a part of her friends' life as long as Bonnie lives, and Damon has already resigned to the fact that he can reunite with Elena only after six decades or so.

However, this does not mean he will try to hook up with Elena's best friend, Bonnie. "I don't even know," Graham revealed to SheKnows about the future of Damon and Bonnie as a couple. "I mean, Ian [Somerhalder] and I have campaigned to work together in so many interviews, and we've just been shut down. So we'll see what the writers come up with. But as of right now, nothing's happened."

Even though there won't be a romance track for Damon and Bonnie, the two friends will have a number of scenes together. They will be each other's emotional pillars while they deal with Elena's absence.

"Bonnie has sort of taken it upon herself to be the uninvited chaperone, which is funny because she and Damon have so much unspoken between them the guilt, the resentments, the gratitude, there's a list of things they're dealing with," executive producer Julie Plec told TVLine.

"Watching them air it out together is actually really nice. We'll continue to watch their friendship build, because they really do owe each other a lot. They're going to go through this whole thing together, which is a fun dynamic we're exploring," the showrunner added.

Season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries" will be darker than the previous seasons, and according to Graham, the fifth episode of the season is an important one for her character.

Viewers will also see Bonnie falling in love with someone familiar, and speculations are rife that the witch's new man is Enzo, Damon's best friend.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to the CW on 8 October.
