Season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries" will see the Salvatore brothers – Damon and Stefan (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley) – leaving their house and moving into Tyler's house, thanks to their mother Lily.

Mama Salvatore reunited with her travelling companions, the heretics, in the previous season, and they are nothing but trouble. The final few moments of season 6 showed a rundown Mystic Falls. Matt was seen patrolling the town, and the final shot showed Damon standing on the clock tower looking down on all the destruction.

It wasn't immediately clear if Mystic Falls was destroyed by Damon or Lily's new family.

Season 7 will explore more of the Salvatore brothers' relationship with their mother and it will finally see them appreciating the relationship they have with each other.

"Everyone's kind of having a shared journey about dealing with the fact of what defines who their family is," executive producer Julie Plec said, according to Buddy TV. "It teaches them a lot about their relationship with each other, their relationship they always wanted with her, and then it puts them in a situation of, are they going to make amends with this woman or are they going to take her down?"

The heretics will butt heads with the Salvatore brothers in season 7, and Lily is not expected to do anything to prevent her "family" from hurting her sons.

Previewing the season, Plec also said that Damon will briefly be exiled from Mystic Falls and forced to live with Alaric, who is dealing with his own demons.

Alaric will be trying to contact his dead wife through witchcraft, but his attempts will be unsuccessful as the Other Side does not exist anymore. "He's not great in that way that he's making some clearly questionable decisions. He's dabbling in the occult in ways that maybe he shouldn't be," Plec said.

As for Caroline, she will be trying to regain her life while being pursued by Stefan.

"Caroline's going to go through a lot this season that I'm not even going to attempt to spoil but it's going to be a pretty massive, massive storyline that will be pretty bananas, but awesome," Plec said.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to the CW in October.
