Thursday's season five finale of "The Vampire Diaries" managed to take away a good number of the show's beloved characters to the Other Side. While some were able to make it back, not everyone was as lucky.
While Alaric, Elena, Stefan, Enzo and Tyler made their way back to Mystic Falls, the final scene had Damon and Bonnie holding hands as they were about to be sucked into oblivion. But not before Elena and Damon finally profess their love for each other.
"You are by far the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my 173 years on this Earth. That I get to die knowing I was loved, not just by anyone, by you, Elena Gilbert, is the epitome of a fulfilled life," Damon tells Elena as she begs him not to leave her.
Fans of the vampire drama are clinging on to the hope that the Damon and Bonnie will be rescued when season six of the CW series returns later this year.
Soon after the episode was aired, #BringBackDamon began trending in the U.S. with many fans expressing grief over Damon's fate.

Before the season finale was aired on Thursday, Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, said that several character who die in the finale will not be making a return in the next season, and this include Grams, Lexi, Silas and Markos, who were all sucked into Oblivion.
Spoilers of the next season are already doing the rounds and it hints at a romance between Stefan and Caroline.
The season finale saw Lexi forcing Stefan to acknowledge his relationship with Caroline, and show creator Caroline Dries said in an interview that season six will have Caroline taking her romantic life into her own hands.
"Caroline's got a little crush/feeling for someone that's going to creep up to the surface and cause a potential rift between her and one of her friends," Dries told TVLine. "So she's like, 'I'm going to push that down.' We're going to see [Caroline] set her sights on [said crush] and try to make a move."
It is not immediately known if Caroline's crush is Stefan, or Enzo, who made it back to Mystic Falls.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 is expected to air sometime in September or October.
