The US military has no plans to conduct coordinated operations with the Russians in striking IS, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.

"Right now, we have no plans. We're not coordinating with the Russians, (and) we're not conducting operations with Russians, nor are we planning to do any of those things here at the ground level," said Steve Warren, spokesman for US military campaign Operation Inherent Resolve against the extremist group -- the Islamic State.

Warren's remarks went in line with Pentagon's stance since Russia started its own air campaign in Syria on 30 September accusing the Russian military of targeting Syrian rebels who opposed the Syrian government rather than IS targets.

However, Russia and UK are coordinating with France in intensifying its operations against IS.

The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that it was stepping up air strikes against IS with the French military, the same day as Russian officials confirmed that a bomb brought down a Russian jetliner in Egypt about two weeks ago, killing 224 people. IS has claimed responsibility for downing the Russian airliner.

According to a press release by the Russian military, Tuesday's operation involved 12 Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bombers targeting IS facilities in Syrian provinces of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, as well as 34 cruise missiles against targets in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

Britain's royal navy warship HMS Defender will support the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group, the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Wednesday.

The ship will provide air defence cover for the French carrier to tackle IS, according to the ministry.

"France is firmly resolved in its determination to tackle ISIL and we need to help too", said British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon in a statement.

"This barbaric terrorist organisation must be destroyed and it's right that we offer all the support we can to confront them," he added.

Fallon said IS was "a threat to our security in the UK, as well as to France and the rest of Europe."

"We will consider any further requests for support from France under Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty following Friday's Paris terror attacks," he stressed.

HMS Defender, which sailed from Portsmouth, last month for a nine-month deployment, has a ship's company of 230 and commissioned on 21 March 2013, the UK MoD said.

The warship is "capable of carrying out a wide range of operations, including anti-piracy and anti-smuggling activities, disaster relief work and surveillance operations as well as high intensity warfare," the ministry noted.
