Upsurge of Talented Women Directors in Indian Cinema

In the history of Indian cinema, the 2000s witnessed a turn in the Indian film arena, with the participation of women in the field of film direction. With emergence of talented women directors, the image of the male-dominated Indian cinema seems to have faded.

The promising women directors in Indian cinema are Deepa Mehta, Aparna Sen and Gurinder Chadha. They broke the stereotype of Indian cinema and brought the film industry into the international arena.

The latest brood of Bollywood female directors includes Zoya Akhtar, Kiran Rao and journalist-turned-film director, Anusha Rizvi, with their ground-breaking films like 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' (2011), Dhobi Ghat (2011), Peepli Live (2010), respectively.

In 2004, the multi-talented Farah Khan made the biggest hit of the year, Main Hoo Na, then Om Shanti Om (2007) and recently Tees Maar Khan (2010).

This upsurge of talented women directors in the Indian film industry has only made it more competitive for the male directors.
