Last month, HTC released the Android Nougat to the current flagship models HTC 10 (un-locked) in select regions and is expected to roll-out the same update to HTC One (M9) series soon. However, there is no official word on whether the company has any plans of deploying the software update to the 2014 flagship phone HTC One (M8) series.

Going by the previous release pattern, the chances of HTC One (M8) getting the Nougat is very bleak, as the device is more than two years old, thus it falls out of the HTC Advantage program, which entitles 24 months of software support for any flagship device.

Having said that, this doesn't not mean end of the road for HTC One (M8) users, as they can still be able to get the latest update through custom ROMs, which are found in abundance in the Internet.

Among them, CyanogenMod is most popular. It brings not only the Nougat features, it also brings exclusive themes, wallpaper, short cuts, Microsoft application suite, Cortana and numerous other value-added features on enhance user-experience.

Prerequisites (things to remember before installing Custom ROM)

  • Make sure the device is rooted before going ahead with custom ROM installation.
  • Make sure USB driver is installed in the PC or else your device (HTC One M8) will not be recognised by the computer.
  • Make sure your device has more than 80% battery, or else there is a chance of the tablet getting temporarily bricked if the installation process is interrupted midway.
  • This CyanogenMod CM 14.1 Android v7.1 Nougat custom ROM series has to be installed on HTC One (M8) single-SIM and One M8 dual-SIM models only, if tried on other devices, it might brick them [to check your device model: Go to Settings >> About phone >> model number].
  • Though installing custom ROM improves the device's performance and UI experiences, it makes the company warranty void; the company will no longer be liable to provide updates in future [users can restore warranty by flashing the device with stock-ROM].
  • Installation of custom ROM requires clearing memory in the phone, so make sure to back all the data by installing Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery/ TWRP in the smartphone.
