A German online dating company has sent a book on homosexuality in animals as a Christmas gift to Ugandan President Yoweri Musevei.

Gleichklang, a leading dating site in Germany, sent President Musevei, "Biological Exuberance – Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity", a book written by Canadian biologist Bruce Bagemihl. The book found that homosexual behaviour was present in more than 450 animal species.

The book has been sent by the dating company to the presidential office in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and to the Ugandan Embassy in the German capital Berlin.

The reason the company chose to send such as gift to President Musevei is his controversial statements on homosexuality. Earlier in the year, after passing the country's Anti-Homosexuality Laws, he had said that the behaviour was 'unnatural'.

"They're disgusting. What sort of people are they?" President Yoweri Musevei had said, according to a CNN report. "I never knew what they were doing. I've been told recently that what they do is terrible. Disgusting. But I was ready to ignore that if there was proof that that's how he is born, abnormal. But now the proof is not there ... I was regarding it as an inborn problem (sic)," he said.

"Genetic distortion — that was my argument. But now our scientists have knocked this one out ... respect African societies and their values," he said. "If you don't agree, just keep quiet. Let us manage our society, then we will see. If we are wrong, we shall find out by ourselves, just the way we don't interfere with yours."

Local reports have found that his administration has been responsible for a systematic persecution of homosexual men and women in Uganda.

Along with the gift, the director of Gleichklang, Seksan Ammawat, and the psychologist Dr. Guido F. Gebauer have sent in a letter to the Ugandan president stating homosexuality was a 'natural' occurrence both in humans and animals, hence must be accepted.
