An Uber cab driver has been arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly molesting a foreign national when she travelled in his vehicle from suburban Bandra to Versova late on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified as 32-year-old Shehbaaz Shaikh. He was nabbed after the victim lodged a complaint with Santacruz police station. A Facebook post about the incident had also gone viral on Thursday.
"Our team contacted the cab aggregator on the basis of the details provided by the complainant. We sought the driver's details from Uber following which Shehbaaz was arrested on Friday," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by DNA.
According to the Facebook post, the driver touched her inappropriately on the pretext of cleaning the rear seat after the victim refused his initial request to sit on the passenger seat. The woman then tried to push him off, but the driver only relented when she started shouting. She then got off the cab and rushed home.
Uber has suspended Shaikh saying that it has a zero-tolerance policy in such instances. "We have suspended the driver from our platform and have shared all details related to the trip and the driver with the relevant authorities (Mumbai Police) for official investigation." Uber said in a statement.
