In an eerie reminder to the Badaun gangrape case, two schoolgirls were found hanging to a tree from the two ends of the same rope in Assam's Karimganj district.

Both the girls, one a class X and the other a class IX student, of a school in Nilambazar area had been missing since Wednesday evening, police said on Friday.

On Thursday morning, the family found the bodies of the girls some 200 meters away from their home in a forest area. The police arrived at the crime scene after being informed by the locals and took the body for post mortem and forensic tests.

The families were handed over the bodies on Friday night after a post-mortem, the result of which is expected to come on Saturday. The post-mortem would also clarify whether or not the girls were raped before murder, as suspected by the locals in the village.

"We are waiting for the post-mortem report which alone can confirm the exact cause of the deaths and if there are any rape angle," IBNLive quoted additional superintendent of police Nabin Singh.

In May this year, two teenaged cousins were found hanging from a tree in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. The family members and relatives of the victims alleged rape and murder by the four men, however, CBI has dismissed rape accusations and freed the accused based on investigation.
