The summer transfer window has now closed, with Premier League clubs spending a total of £870m ($1.3bn) on players. That figure means than total outgoings for the calendar year have surpassed £1bn for the first time.

But which clubs conducted the best business during the window and which clubs are left looking short this season? IBTimes UK sports editor Nick Howson reviews the best and worst deals of the transfer window.

Best transfer window deals

The Ayew brothers (Jordan and Andre) at Aston Villa and Swansea, respectively, have certainly impressed. They are two exciting players who have already produced for their new clubs.

People have criticised Manchester United for some of their deals this window, but Matteo Darmian looks a very handy player. He fills a position that has been a problem at Old Trafford since the Gary Neville days.

I think the deadline day addition of Joleon Lescott was really good by Aston Villa as he had an impressive season with West Brom last year.

Glenn Murray to Bournemouth is also an excellent deal for the promoted side. I think Crystal Palace were wrong to try and move him on for someone like Connor Wickham, who has no real goal-scoring record.

Worst transfer window deals

Except for Pedro Im not convinced by the new additions at Chelsea. Some of the signings, like Michael Hector and Radamel Falcao, are still unproven at this level. It just looks like theyve tightened the purse strings a little bit and brought in unknown players.

Arsenal are the only club in the top five European leagues not to bring in an outfield player and that smacks of frugality on their part. Wenger seems indecisive on the sort of players he wants and it felt like an Arsenal transfer window in the pre-Ozil, pre-Sanchez era, where Arsenal try to make much of very little and dont get very far.

Everyone thinks Petr Cech is one of the best signings of the window, but maybe theyve made a mistake in not reinforcing some of their weak areas, particularly in attack where Olivier Giroud has got the pressure on his shoulders all over again.

Tottenham fans as well are up in arms about their lack of forward options. Thats been emphasised by Harry Kanes disappointing form at the start of the season. He hasnt scored so far and now they havent brought in a genuine striker to accompany him.
