The first month of the financial year 2017-2018 opened on a good note for Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker. Seven of its models made it to the top 10 best selling passenger car list in April. But it wasn't devoid of intrigues with a few surprises springing up along the way. In what is turning out to be a fierce sibling rivalry, Maruti Suzuki's popular hatchback Swift beat the long-reigning Alto to take to the top spot.

Maruti Suzuki had six cars in the top 10 selling cars' list in April last year. According to the data made available by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Swift recorded sales of 23,802 units in April as opposed to 15,661 units in the corresponding month last year, registering a year-on-year (yoy) growth of 51.98 percent. Alto, the long-dominant model was pushed down to the second position in April 2017, despite sales of 22,549 units as against the 16,583 units sold in April last year.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the premium hatchback came in the third spot again pushing one of its own siblings, Wagon R to the fourth spot in the sales chart. Baleno, a mainstay of Nexa premium dealerships of Maruti Suzuki posted sales 17,530 units when compared to the 9,562 units in April 2016. Previously in eighth position last year, the hatchback took a giant leap to slot in the third position this year.
