BJP's dream to gain foothold in Tamil Nadu receives a blow; Rajinikanth clarifies he won't join any party

The BJP's dream to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu received a blow after Rajinikanth put an end to the rumours about his joining politics. The superstar has cleared his stand by stating that he may take a plunge, but he would not join any party, hinting that Rajini may float a new party if he enters politics at all.

Rajinikanth was addressing his fans in Chennai on May 15. The meeting, which happened after a gap of eight years, was held at Raghavendra Mandapam, Kodambakkam, in Chennai. The actor said that his last political association happened two decades ago, but since then many have misused his name to gain mileage in politics. Rajinikanth categorically stated, "I had cleared my political stand earlier – I will not support any party."

The actor claims that his current focus is on acting and not politics. "Some people have wanted to become MLAs and politicians and have been using me to make money. God willing, if I ever decide to join politics I will do it for the welfare of people and not to make money. As of now, god wants me to be an actor, and I am happy with that," Firstpost quoted the actor as saying.

The BJP has been wooing Rajinikanth to join the party for years now. After the death of J Jayalalithaa, which led to political chaos in Tamil Nadu, the saffron party reportedly tried its best to get the actor enter its fold. 

Rajinikanth's meeting with fans had generated a lot of curiosity as it was believed that this was an opportunity for them to hear the future course of action that he had decided about taking a political plunge.

Talking about his films, Rajinikanth admitted that his movies like Kochadaiiyaan and Lingaa failed at the box office, but Kabali did well. The Endhiran star felt that a film will only work if it has good content.

The superstar also had a suggestion for the youth, and requested them not to get addicted to drinking. "Look after your family and kids. Do not drink too much — I would not say do not drink at all as you are not yogis," he added on a lighter note.
