A 17-year-old teenager was killed in a shark attack off Port Douglas in Queensland while swimming at Rudder Reef, making it the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

Emergency services were called at about 11.30 am local time on Monday to rescue the boy who was bitten by a shark. The type of shark that attacked the boy is not yet known.

The teenager is said to have succumbed to an 'upper thigh injury' and could not be revived by the Queensland Ambulance Service despite being given a CPR, according to News.com.au.

The last such fatal shark attack in Australia was recorded in September when an Englishman was killed at Byron Bay in New South Wales.

"It is a real shock to all of us that this has occurred," Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu told ABC News.

"He had just completed year 12 at Mossman State High School - he was a lovely fellow and we are very, very sad that this has happened."
