The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will be tried in her state for failing to file income tax returns 20 years ago.

After Jayalalithaa and her close aide didn't file returns for the financial year 1993-94, income tax officials had filed criminal cases against her in 1996 and 1997. The chief minister had then claimed that she had no taxable income for that year adding that there was no question of tax evasion as alleged. The income tax department, however, insisted that it is mandatory to file returns.

The top court has now ordered that the trial must be completed within four months, various reports said.
