The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) has announced the list of the top ten cleanest cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The Swachh Survekshan 2017 was conducted in 434 cities across India where in 37 lakhs citizens participated. "The Swachh Survekshan 2017 is the largest survey conducted by government," said M Venkaiah Naidu, the Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Information and Broadcasting.

While Indore in Madhya Pradesh topped the list of the top ten cleanest cities followed by Bhopal, here's the success stories of the five states that hosts the cleanest cities.

Madhya Pradesh

A total of 35 cities were a part of the Swachh Survekshan 2017 of which Indore and Bhopal secured the first and the second position respectively. While Bhopal had secured the 21st position in 2016 and the 105th position in 2014, it has risen to the position of being the second cleanest city. Like ways, even Indore has shown tremendous improvement after it rose to the number one position as compared to the 149th rank and 25th position that it received in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

Andhra Pradesh

Among the 32 cities that took part in the survey, Vijaywada was declared as the third cleanest city. Among the 32 cities, 16 cities made it to the top 100 cleanest cities of India.

Gujarat

A total of 31 cities from Gujarat took part in the Swachh Survekshan 2017, among which two cities Surat and Vadodara secured the 2nd and 10th position respectively. Vododara, which stood at a position of 214 in 2014, has shown a drastic improvement. Meanwhile, Porbandar has secured the lowest position in Gujarat. A total of 22 cities from Gujarat made it to the top 100 cleanest cities of India.

Karnataka

While 27 cities from Karnataka took part in the survey, only two cities made it to the top 100. Mysuru was declared as the fifth cleanest city.

Tamil Nadu

Among the 28 cities which participated in the survey, 9 of them made it to the top 100. Tiruchirapally secured the sixth position.
