Actor Rajinikanth is loved by his fans for memorable performances in his superhit movies. The 65-year-old star has become one of the most popular Indian actors across the world having acted in more than 150 movies in a career spanning 41 years.

Rajini, formerly a bus conductor in Bengaluru, started his career as an actor with K Balachander's "Apoorva Raagangal" in 1975. The legendary actor has been honoured with the second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan in 2016, and is also a receipient of six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. However, he hasn't bagged any National Film Award yet.

Though there are many must-watch Rajini movies, International Business Times India, has compiled a list of five evergreen films that have made him the "supestar Rajinikanth".

Thalapathi

The 1991 movie "Thalapathi," directed by veteran Mani Ratnam is one of the best movies of Rajinikanth. It also stars Mammootty, Shobana, Arvind Swamy, Srividya, Amrish Puri and Bhanupriya in key roles, and has the hit songs "Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu," "Kattu Kuyilu" and "Sundari Kannal Oru Sethi," which are still among the most popular Tamil songs.

Baasha

Rajinikanth's iconic character autodriver Manikkam in director Suresh Krissna's action movie "Baasha" released in 1995 still remains in the minds of Rajini-fans. It stars Nagma in the lead role and also has Raghuvaran, Janagaraj and Devan in pivotal roles. Owning to the fabulous response from the audience, the film was later dubbed into Telugu with the same title and was remade in Kannada as "Kotigobba." The popular songs of "Baasha" are "Naan Autokaaran," "Style Style Thaan" and "Baatcha Paaru."

Muthu

KS Ravikumar's supehit movie "Muthu" (1995) is one of the best movies of Rajinikanth in which he played the role of Muthuvel, a loyal servant to the zamin family. Meena, Raghuvaran and Sarath Babu are seen in pivotal roles in the movie, which was inspired from Priyadarshan and Mohanlal's Malayalam movie "Thenmavin Kombath," released in 1994. "Oruvan Oruvan Muthalili" and "Thilana Thilana" are the popular songs of the comedy romantic entertainer.

Arunachalam

Sundar C's directorial venture "Arunachalam," starring  Rajinikanth, Soundarya and Rambha in the lead roles bagged the Tamil Nadu State Best Film Award in 1997 after it opened to tremendous audience response. Rajini played the titular role in the film, which is popular for its song "Athanda Ethanda Arunachalam Naanthanda." 

Padaiyappa

Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan and Soundarya-starrer "Padaiyappa" is one of the commercially successful movies of Rajini. In the KS Ravikumar-directed film, the superstar played the titular role, a mechanical engineer whose father (Sivaji Ganesan) gives up few properties to his foster brother. After Padaiyappa discovers that a hill on his property is solid granite, he starts a granite business and becomes rich. The popular songs of the movie include "En Peru Padayappa," "Minsara Kanna" and "Suthi Suthi."
