Taking moral responsibility for the accidents and incidents which have taken place during the past few months, the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral DK Joshi resigned from the post on Wednesday evening.

The government has accepted the resignation of Admiral Joshi with immediate effect, a statement from Press Information Bureau stated.

Vice Admiral RK Dhowan, the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, will be discharging the duties of CNS, till the appointment of a regular CNS.

Seven sailors were injured and two officers are missing after an accident on board submarine INS Sindhuratna off the Mumbai coast.

INS Sindhuratna, the Russian-origin Kilo Class submarine, was carrying no weapons or ammunition.

This is a second major accident concerning an Indian Navy Submarine. Back in August, submarine INS Sindhurakshak sank in the Mumbai harbour after an explosion on board, killing 18 sailors.

Admiral Joshi assumed had office on 31 August 2012 and is known as a specialist in anti-submarine warfare.
