After weeks of speculation, Japanese electronics major Sony on Monday finally launched the water-proof Xperia ZR smartphone in London.

Sony Xperia ZR sports a 4.55-inch HD 1280x720p display with exclusive BRAVIA Engine 2 and runs on the Android mobile OS v4.1 Jelly Bean powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. It houses 2GB RAM and 8GB internal memory which can be extended up to 32GB via microSD card. Other specifications include an impressive 13.0-megapixel camera with the company's exclusive Exmor RS camera sensors and a VGA camera on the front.

One striking feature of Xperia ZR is that the smartphone can take pictures and videos underwater to a depth of five feet. In comparison, its recently released sibling Xperia Z can only take pictures under 3.3 feet of water.

Considering the above specifications, Xperia ZR has pretty much the same features as that of Sony's flagship smartphone Xperia Z sans the physical form.

"The Xperia ZR pushes the boundary on where and how consumers can use the full potential of their smartphone. By combining Sony's leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment," said director of Xperia Marketing, Sony Mobiles, Calum MacDougall, during the launch event.

Sony has confirmed that the new Xperia ZR will hit select global markets in the second quarter of the year, but chose to remain silent on the details regarding its price.
