New Delhi, Oct 14 (ANI): Talking about a major stampede in a Hindu temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh which killed at least 113 people, NCP leader Tariq Anwar said on Monday that the state government as well as district administration is responsible for the mishap. MP temple stampede: Death toll rises to 109, over 100 injured

Datia, Oct 14 (ANI): At least 109 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede triggered by rumours of a river bridge collapse near a remote Hindu temple in Datia region of Madhya Pradesh. The State government ordered a judicial inquiry into the mishap which was a shocking re-run of the tragedy at the same site in 2006 when 50 pilgrims were washed away. Senior Medical Officer at a government hospital in Gwalior, Dr GS Patel informed that the hospital is looking after relief and rescue operation. Pilgrims panicked when rumours spread that the railings broke on a bridge that led to the temple thereby triggering the stampede. Some devotees were crushed to death under the feet of fellow worshippers, others drowned after falling or jumping into the river Sindh. Local media said the police used batons to control the crowd, prompting many people to panic. Oct 14, 2013

New Delhi/ Nagpur/ Gopalpur, Oct 14 (ANI): The most powerful storm to hit India in more than a decade, Cyclone Phailin waned considerably on Sunday before leaving 14 people dead and a trail of widespread destruction behind. Cabinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth confirmed the death toll as the Phailin subsided from the affected state. Even as the cyclone devastated a large section of both the affected states, Home Affairs Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that it is to the relief that the destruction caused is much lesser than the 2004 destruction caused by tsunami. Odisha Chief Minister announces compensation for Phailin victims

Bhubaneshwar, Oct 14 (ANI): Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of Odisha announced compensation to cyclone victims in cash and kind. A mass evacuation saved thousands of people from India's fiercest cyclone in 14 years, but aid workers warned a million would need help after their homes and livelihoods were destroyed. Cyclone Phailin headed inland on Sunday after making landfall from the Bay of Bengal, bringing winds of more than 200 kph (125 mph) that ripped apart homes and tore down trees. He also confirmed that more than 2,00,000 mud houses and standing crops were damaged and victims would be paid the compensation amount after due assessment. Further, the Chief Minister confirmed that roads would be repaired within the next 24 hours, while power and electricity would be restored in 36 hours in most places. Oct 14, 2013
