Politicians condemn SP s splurge on Saifai Mahotsav even as riot victims suffer

Lucknow/ New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): Different leaders from various political parties condemned the Saifai Mahotsav organized by the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh while the Muzaffarnagar riot victims continue to suffer in the relief camps. SP has drawn flak for spending millions of rupees on its fortnight-long annual carnival, while the riot victims in the state shiver in relief camps. Congress leader, Digvijay Singh called SP insensitive and blamed the government for not being able to prevent the riots in the first place. Maoists in Odisha kill road contractor and injure a villager

Narayanpatna, Jan 09 (ANI): Armed Maoist rebels killed a road contractor and injured a villager in a remote village of Odisha. The rebels attacked two villagers from Balipeta village in Koraput district after branding them as police informers. The body of one villager, said to be a road contractor, was found on Tuesday and the other was found with a bleeding slit throat and rushed to a nearby hospital. The Maoists also left a warning letter to the villagers saying they had punished the duo as they were working as police informers. Jan 9, 2014

Madhyamgram gang rape case: HC will take up case if govt fails to deliver orders

Kolkata, Jan 09 (ANI): After the victim’s father in Madhyamgram gang-rape case filed a plea in Kolkata High Court seeking a CBI probe into the case, the court on Thursday gave an alternative to the state government to take up the case efficiently failing which the court will take up the issue. North India shivers with bitter cold wave

Dharamsala /Gorakhpur/Lucknow, Jan 09 (ANI): Dense fog reduced visibility even as biting cold has jammed life in parts of northern India on Thursday. A blanket of thick fog enveloping northern India hit rail traffic with dozens of trains running behind schedule or cancelled. The visibility dropped below 100 metres. Meanwhile, the mercury dropped to freezing point in Dharamsala, leading to formation of frost on plants. People were seen sitting around bonfires on pavements in Gorakhpur. Commuters at a railway station also complained of delays, affecting their day-to-day life. Meanwhile, authorities in Uttar Pradesh also introduced night shelters ‘Raain Basera’ for poor people.
