Raghuram Rajan report will help Bihar get more financial aid: Nitish Kumar

Patna, Sep 26 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday hailed the Raghuram Rajan panel report that has ranked Bihar among India's least advanced states. Kumar said that the report will pave the way for getting more funds from the Centre for development in his state. He was speaking after release of a report of a panel headed by then Chief Economic Advisor Raghuram Rajan, now RBI Governor. The report has made a case for ending the "special category" criteria for providing additional assistance to poorer states and has suggested a new matrix to decide on which states should get the most financial assistance from the Centre. The report ranked Goa and Kerala as the most advanced state and Odisha and Bihar the least. Sep 26, 2013

Mumbai gang rape case: Confusion prevails over whereabouts of one accused

Mumbai, Sep 26 (ANI): The whereabouts of one accused in the gang rape of a 22-year photojournalist in Mumbai became contentious on Thursday when he failed to appear for a court hearing, while jail authorities and probe agencies passed the blame for the mix up. Earlier, Mumbai police had filed a 600-page charge sheet against the five men on September 19. Police had said that it had 'strong' evidence against the accused and had listed 42 witnesses in the charge sheet. The 22-year-old victim, accompanied by a male colleague to the mill for an assignment, was assaulted on August 22. Public prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam informed mediapersons in Mumbai that the court had directed the jail superintendent to produce the accused in the court on September 27. Sep 26, 2013

India raises non-immigration visa issue with US

New York, Sept 26 (ANI): India expressed its concern to US over the much sought after H1-B visas and added that they have addressed the economic apprehensions of the latter. Indian IT firms which operate in the United States are angered by restrictions on travel visas for skilled workers. India's Foreign Minister, Salman Khurshid met US secretary of state John Kerry and discussed plethora of bilateral issues ahead of the meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 27 in Washington. Khurshid added that the US is yet to address the issue of H1-B visas. He added that both the nations discussed the steps that need to be taken to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries. Khurshid also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the UNGA and discussed about the preparations ahead of Singh's visit to China. Govt to launch new employment generation schemes: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi, Sept 26 (ANI): Rural development minister, Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday that the government would soon launch new skilled development, employment generation schemes to replace current ones like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The minister was launching the annual rural development scheme in New Delhi where he highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the scheme. He said that it was not a permanent solution as the dynamics was changing in the rural India. Central Jail in Manipur takes several reform measures for inmates

Manipur, Sep 26 (ANI): The Central Jail, situated at Sajiwa in East Imphal, houses over 640 inmates in seven different sectors. It has become be Northeast's first jail to have meditation, sports and other co-curricular activities for the inmates, who can now play Volleyball, meditate, do yoga or exercise at a gym. The jail has also different sections for teaching painting and education to inmates. A specialized team from the "Art of Living" Centre has been providing classes to inmates to change their lives, and help the addicts stay away from drugs. Police in Jharkhand seize Maoists' arms, ammunition and also horses

Latehar, Sep 26 (ANI): Jharkhand Police has seized ample ammunition and also two horses after a brief gun-battle with Maoists in Latehar region. Police were conducting an anti-Maoist campaign in Kurumkheta jungle of the district when the commandoes of CoBRA (Combat Battalion for Resolute Action) spotted possible presence of the ultras. Following a gun battle, the Maoists managed to flee from the scene. However, security forces conducted a thorough search of the area, during which they seized two horses and 147 bullets of 8 mm guns.
