Registration of FIR in cognizable offences mandatory: SC

New Delhi, Nov 12 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that registration of First Information report (FIR) in cognizable offences is mandatory. A five-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, clarified that no preliminary inquiry by a police official is permissible as a condition for registering FIR in cognizable offences. The bench said that police officials cannot avoid registration of FIR and action must be taken against them for not lodging FIR in cognizable offences. The apex court further said that preliminary investigation must be completed within seven days. The ruling came on a petition seeking clarity on the process of police investigations. Nov 12, 2013

Mumbai: Residents of Campa Cola compound protest against demolition

Mumbai, Nov 12 (ANI): Residents of 103 illegal flats on the Campa Cola compound in Worli area of Mumbai on Tuesday protested against forcible eviction by the Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) of the building. MCGM had earlier issued eviction notices last week stating that the illegal structure will be brought down any time after November 12. Meanwhile, Mumbai police too warned the residents not to create any law and order problem during the process. UP govt employees begin indefinite strike, SP appeals for talks

Lucknow, Nov 12 (ANI): UP government employees began an indefinite strike in the state on Tuesday after talks with the government on parity with central government employees turned futile. Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal appealed the employees to have a talk with the government in order to resolve the issue. The strike is allegedly called by the Rajya Karmchari Sanyukt Parishad.
