EC bans public rallies by Azam Khan and Amit Shah

Lucknow/ Moradabad, April 12 (ANI): Election Commission (EC) of India banned SP leader Azam Khan and BJP General Secretary Amit Shah from addressing any public rallies after they made "highly inflammatory speeches" during election campaigns. Country's independent election body also ordered the authorities to register FIR against the two politicians and initiate criminal proceedings. Commenting on the notice issued to him, Khan said he exercised his freedom to speech. Meanwhile, SP leader Rajendra Chaudhary called the Commission's decision as unfortunate and said comparison cannot be made between the two leaders. Apr 12, 2014

LS Polls 2014: Assam, Tripura, Sikkim and Goa begin voting

Goa/ Assam/ Tripura, April 12 (ANI): Voting in four states, namely Assam, Goa, Sikkim and Tripura began on Saturday, with voters casting ballots that would decide the fate of over 1.2 billion people. Polling began at 7am in four states for seven consituencies, namely three seats in Assam, two in Goa and one each in Sikkim and Tripura. Around 50 lakh voters will vote for 74 candidates in the four states. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who was amongst the early voters, pinned hopes on his party. In Goa, 19 candidates are in the fray for the North and South Goa constituencies, which will witness a single phased poll. While Assam has nearly 30 million eligible voters, Goa has over 1 million. Sikkim has a 362,326 electorate, of which 175,549 are women. As many as 1.13 million electorate are eligible to vote as 12 candidates battle it out for the Tripura East constituency. Apr 12, 2014

SC rejects plea questioning clean chit to Modi on role in 2002 Gujarat riots

New Delhi, April 11 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday has turned down a plea questioning the clean chit given to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots. A bench comprising of Justices HL Dattu and SA Bobde also declined the plea for reconstituting the Special Investigation Team (SIT) involving retired judges of the apex court on the ground that this option was not good to raise it at this moment. It also turned down the inclusion of a person belonging from the minority community into the SIT.
