Nation pays tribute to Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary

New Delhi, Oct 31 (ANI): The nation is paying tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary on Friday. Congress Party President and Indira Gandhi's daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi and members of her family were the first to reach Shakti Sthal, the memorial dedicated to Indira Gandhi to pay a floral tribute. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also present at the venue. Other leaders and people from all walks of life are expected to follow. Indira Gandhi fell to assassins' bullets on this day in 1984 at her 1, Safdarjung Road residence in New Delhi. She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards more than four months after Operation Blue Star, which was launched on the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Functions will also be held at the Indira Gandhi Memorial at 1 Safdarjung Road. Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee also paid tribute at Shakti Sthal to mark Indira Gandhi's death anniversary. Pranab Mukherjee and Rajnath Singh flags off 'Run for Unity' to mark Sardar Patel's birth anniversar

New Delhi/ Hyderabad, Oct 31 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday flagged off 'Run for Unity' at the Rashtrapati Bhavan to mark Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary. The residents and staff of Rashtrapati Bhavan, along with the President's Bodyguard, the army guard and the Delhi Police participated in the run. A Unity pledge was also administered by Omita Paul, secretary to the president, to all the staff members prior to the run. Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off 'Run for Unity' in Hyderabad to mark the birth anniversary of Patel. Hyderabad, Oct 31 (ANI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday addressed the passing out parade at National Police Academy in Hyderabad. Singh said that the ‘Dikshant Parade’ is being held in the academy after a gap of ten years on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. He added that credit of merging 562 princely states with India goes only to Sardar Patel. UK will never forget service of India's heroes during World War I: British Defence Secretary

New Delhi, Oct 31 (ANI): British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said his country would never forget enormous service rendered by India's heroes while commemorating their contribution in the World War I under the United Kingdom's flag. Earlier, Fallon, who is on a day-long visit, paid homage to over a million Indian soldiers who fought World War I and laid a wreath at the war memorial at India Gate in New Delhi. The British Defence Secretary indirectly sought India's assistance to tackle ISIS. This year marks the centenary of World War I, which was fought between 1914 and 1918. Manipur artisans work towards preserving traditional handicrafts

Manipur, Oct 31 (ANI): Forty seven years old Longjam Hemolata Devi, a weaver from Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi Chabungbam Leikai, is one of the few artisans involved in making Shaphee Lanphee- a rare traditional handicraft of Manipur embroidered with meaningful motifs. Hemolata has been working with dedication to promote the Shaphee Lanphee craft for years. To preserve the age old craft, she provides training to some local women in order to carry forward the legacy. All together 20 women are currently learning the art of Saphee Lanphee under Hemolata"s guidance. This traditional handloom product is intricately designed with different meaningful patterns. Earlier it was used as "Mana Phee" - a reward by the kings to brave soldiers as a token of honour after winning a battle.
