Massive fire engulfs commercial building in Surat

Surat, May 29 (ANI): A massive fire broke out in a high-rise building in Surat on Thursday morning. As per initial reports, the fire first broke out at Vipul Sarees' shop located on the fourth floor of the 17-story Orchid Tower and quickly spread to other floors. There are no reports of casualties so far. At least 20 fire tenders are battling the fire but given the massive stock of textile material stored in the building, it would be sometime before the fire is controlled. May 29, 2014

Modi had contested from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Vadodara in Gujarat in the General Elections and won from both constituencies. Modi had defeated AAP's Arvind Kejriwal and Congress' Ajay Rai in Varanasi. He also won the Vadodara seat by a record margin of over 5 lakh votes against Congress' Madhusudan Mistry. First session of 16th Lok Sabha from June 4

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): The Union Cabinet has recommended convening of the first session of the 16th Lok Sabha from June 4 to June 11. Briefing the reporters, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu confirmed that the first session of 16th Lok Sabha will be held from June 4 to June 11. Naidu said that former parliamentary affairs minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath will be the Protem Speaker, who will perform the duties of the office of the Speaker till the election of Speaker. "During the inaugural session of the 16th Lok Sabha, newly-elected members to Lower House will take oath on June 4 and 5," Naidu said. The first session will also witness election of the new Speaker and the joint address by the President to the two Houses. The Rajya Sabha session will begin on June 9 with a joint address by the President Pranab Mukherjee, Naidu said. May 29, 2014

Delhi students perform "freeze mobs" to stir awareness on women's safety

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Flash mobs are passe; these students grabbed eyeballs while they staged a freeze mob at the heart of New Delhi recently in a bid to let India confront its culture of violence against women. Smriti Singhal, a volunteer of the organizing group, The Education Tree, said that they do not want to send sermons, but it is a stride towards a change they want to see in every individual. When a group of students performed a freeze mob with the theme "Jo mera hai woh mera hai" (What is mine is mine) at downtown New Delhi's central business district, onlookers were pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of the event. Two Dalit sisters gang-raped in Badaun, politicos react

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Politicos on Thursday reacted over the gang-rape of two teen girls in Badaun. The girls were allegedly gang-raped and later hanged from a tree in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district on Wednesday. The two girls, who were cousins aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on Tuesday night. Their bodies were found hanging from a tree in Katra village on Wednesday morning. The incident triggered protests in the area with villagers alleging police apathy following which an FIR was registered against seven persons including constables Sarvesh Yadav and Rakshapal Yadav, who were suspended. As soon as the news spread, villagers gathered at the site and claimed that police had refused to register an FIR on Tuesday night. Four people, including a constable were arrested on Thursday.
