Amritsar, Nov 7 (ANI): Devotees thronged holy Sikh shrine Golden Temple in Amritsar city of India's northern state of Punjab on Thursday to mark the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh faith. Thousands of regular devotees and pilgrims from far and near converged at the Golden Temple to pay obeisance to the holy book Guru Granth Sahib, light candles and offer prayers for the well being of their families. A devotee, Gurvinder Singh, said people from far off places visit the holy temple to seek blessings for a better future. Fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, was known for his humility, service, and deep devotion. He founded the city of Amritsar and designed the Golden Temple.
On this particular day, revered as the most auspicious, devout Sikhs and even others from across the world throng Golden Temple to take holy dip on the occasion of Sikh festival Gurpurab. Meanwhile, in Poonch district of northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, devotees took part in a procession where the youths displayed their capabilities in martial arts. Shimla, Nov 7(ANI): Villagers in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state organised a fair to promote traditional dance of archery, 'Thoda', on Wednesday. The fair, which was held at Raggyan village, over 20 kilometres from Shimla city, aimed at preserving the traditional art. Many young archers were seen performing the art during the fair and urged more and more youth to preserve this heritage. On the beats of traditional drums, people aim at each other with bow and arrow on legs. One of the organisers, Pawan Thakur, said that young generation should now come forward and develop such ancient art. This fair is a blend of religious belief and love for century-old 'Thoda' sport. Allahabad, Nov 7 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged at holy River Ganges in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state to take a holy dip on the occasion of 'Kartik Purnima' or full moon day on Thursday. Devout Hindus thronged river bank in northern Allahabad city to perform rituals at the confluence of three holy rivers-- Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati. As per tradition, holy dip in River Ganges is described as auspicious on full moon day as it leads to salvation. Legends say Ganges has flown from the heaven to the earth to wash away the worldly sins of mankind. Another devotee, Sushma, said earthen oil lamps are floated in the river and prayers are offered to the almighty. People in Hapur town also celebrated the full moon day. Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made to avoid any mishap. Kochi, Nov 07 (ANI): Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said that there is need for 'blue revolution' in the country for further development of aquaculture as an important agricultural activity without ruining the environment. Aquaculture refers to all forms of active culturing of aquatic animals and plants, occurring in marine, brackish, or fresh waters. Singh was speaking at the inauguration of two-day Global Agro Meet in Kerala. In July this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also called for 'blue revolution'. The international conference and exposition on value added agriculture and food processing, to promote agriculture and agro processing sector in the state, began in Kochi on Thursday. It was inaugurated by Singh in the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The agro expo will be on for three days during which various products made of fruits and vegetables will also be kept on display. Meanwhile, Singh said there should be discussion on dealing with wastage of fruits and vegetables during storage.Nov 7, 2014
