PM Modis first Cabinet expansion to take place by afternoon

New Delhi, Nov 09 (ANI): Almost 20 new faces are expected to take oath of office to be a part of the reshuffled Union Cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Manohar Parrikar, who tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Goa on Saturday, is widely expected to bag the post of the next Defence Minister. The BJP Parliamentary Board held a meeting in New Delhi on Saturday to finalize the list of leaders joining the Union Cabinet. Besides Parrikar, party MPs Anurag Thakur, Col. Sonaram Chaudhary and Hansraj Ahir are among those likely to be included in the Cabinet. BJP leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Rajiv Pratap Rudy are also expected to be allotted Cabinet berths. Former union minister Yashwant Sinha's son Jayant too is in the race for the Cabinet berth, with reports suggesting that the first-time Hazaribagh MP is being considered as a Minister of State (MoS) for Defence or Finance. Indian Navy pays tribute to sailor killed after recovery vessel sunk off Vizag coast

Visakhapatnam, Nov 09 (ANI): Indian Navy paid tribute to its sailor who was killed after Torpedo Recovery Vessel sunk off the Visakhapatnam coast during a naval exercise in which four others went missing. Navy performed the last rites of commander Satish Soni by giving him state honour while the bereaved family and friends mourned and offered prayers. Soni’s wife, Sumitha Jayanth offered her last respects at the funeral. A torpedo recovery vessel sank off the coastal city of Visakhapatnam killing at least one person, the navy said on Friday, in the latest accident to raise concerns about the ageing fleet. Four other crew members are missing from the 28 personnel on board when the ship sank late on Thursday (November 06). The vessel was on an exercise to recover practice torpedoes fired by fleet ships, when flooding occurred in one of the compartments, the navy said in a statement. Nov 9, 2014

Two security personnel hurt in militant attack in Kashmir

Qazigund, Nov 09 (ANI): At least two personnel of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured in a militant attack in Qazigund town of Kashmir’s Kulgam district, said police. The militants escaped taking advantage of darkness, added police. They also said search operations had been launched in the area to nab the assailants. The injured troopers were shifted to a nearby medical facility. The militants also opened fire at the bus in which the CRPF personnel were traveling. India has been bolstering its defences along the de facto border with Pakistan, fearing militant groups fighting the US-led coalition in Afghanistan will turn their energies to Kashmir, where it is trying to end a 25-year insurgency. Tamil rights groups urge govt to take up fishermen issue with Sri Lanka

Chennai, Nov 09 (ANI): Tamil Rights groups screened a documentary in Chennai showcasing the plight of their fishermen and urged Central government to raise the issue with the Sri Lankan government. Five Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in 2011 on charges of smuggling drugs and on October 30, the Colombo High Court held them guilty. Talking to mediapersons in Chennai, the founder of ‘the May 17 Movement’, a group demanding an independent state for Tamils living in India and Sri Lanka, Thirumurugan Gandhi, said the Indian government needs to take up the investigation very seriously. Gandhi alleged that despite Sri Lankan defence personnel visiting India time and again, the government has not bothered to take up the issue with them. Nov 9, 2014

Mushroom cultivation gains popularity as an alternative farming option in the Northeast

Tripura, Nov 09 (ANI): Climatic conditions in India, especially the Northeastern region, are favourable for natural occurance of mushrooms. And, realizing the potential of this non-traditional cash-crop, many people in the region are shifting their attention towards mushroom cultivation. The Ministry of Rural Development runs a special scheme on mushroom farming, which motivates many farmers to adopt this alternative form of farming. Meet Nilotpal Sinha, a teacher turned entrepreneur who runs "Vivekananda Mushroom centre" at South Hurua in North Tripura. Started mushroom farming in 2003 in a small area, today his centre produces 6 kg of crop everyday. Sinha earns Rs. 25,000 to 30,000 in a month by producing milky and oyster mushrooms. Mushroom consumption in India is comparatively low, but 55 per cent of the households consume mushrooms in their daily diet. Nov 9, 2014
