General Dalbir Singh leaves for Assam to review situation

New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Army Chief General Dalbir Singh on Saturday left for Assam to take stock of the situation following the attacks by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit group) on Tuesday. General Singh had earlier on Friday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to review the security situation in Assam and stated that the operations against Bodo militants would be intensified. Six die as cold wave tightens grip in India

Saharsa, Dec 27 (ANI): At least six people have died in Bihar due to extreme cold wave conditions, officials have confirmed. All the deaths were reported from Saharsa district in the state. Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated across India with mercury touching new lows. Saharsa district magistrate, Shashi Bhushan, said a probe has been ordered into the deaths. The cold has inconvenienced locals on the streets as they struggle to find means to keep themselves warm, often burning scraps of rubbish to create a bonfire. Soma, the mother of the deceased, said they rushed him to a local hospital after he felt uneasy, but could not survive. The sudden dip in temperatures is said to have been caused by snowfall in the Himalayas and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. Ghaziabad /New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Indian capital New Delhi recorded its first swine flu death. The deceased identified as Sheel Goel, resident of East Model Town in Ghaziabad was admitted to the ICU of Ganga Ram Hospital in a serious condition on December 21. She was tested positive for swine flu. She was earlier being treated in a local hospital in Ghaziabad. The authorities claimed that the victim had come from South Africa few days before her death. However, the family denied any abroad visit and said the victim didn’t even have a passport. Dec 27, 2014

Five dead in fire at Bhiwandi timber warehouse

Bhiwandi, Dec 27 (ANI): At least five people suffocated to death after a massive fire broke out at a timber warehouse in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi area during the wee hours of Saturday. According to reports, four others have been injured in the fire. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained as yet but it was brought under control by daybreak after a four-hour operation. All those died are residents of Nepal and worked as labourers. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of three is reported to be serious. Security stepped up along border in wake of attacks in India's northeast

Kanpur/ New Delhi/ Assam, Dec 27 (ANI): Director General (DG) of Seema Sashtra Bal (SSB) or armed border force on Friday (December 26) said they would cooperate with army and police against the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the tribal militant group that had shot dead more than 80 people in Assam this week. India has also sought help from Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh in an offensive against the militant group. Some militants may have fled to neighbouring Bhutan while their leader is believed to be in Myanmar, officials and police said, prompting calls for cooperation. Meanwhile, SSB DG B.D. Sharma said the problem was intense in the region due to open border. Meanwhile, Indian security expert Uday Bhaskar said the Bodo problem is not a new challenge for India and persisting since last 20-25 years. Dec 27, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Microsoft Corp CEO, Satya Nadella who is on a vacation in India, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed about 'Digital India' concept. Nadella also met India's Communications and Information Technology (IT) Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and discussed about 'Digital India'. Nadella said that through new technology and concepts every Indian could be empowered. Nadella, a 46-year old born in India who led the creation of Microsoft's Internet-based, or "cloud" computing services, is only Microsoft's third CEO in 39 years, taking over from Steve Ballmer, who inherited the job from Gates in 2000. Grenade blast in Imphal injures at least four

Imphal, Dec 27 (ANI): At least four people were injured in a grenade blast on Friday in Imphal, Manipur. The blast took place at around 5.30 pm when an unidentified person hurled a grenade in front of an office 'Angels Digital Media Service'. The injured, who were inside the shop at the time of blast, sustained minor injuries. Security personnel rushed at the site and investigation is underway. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast yet. On December 21, three people were killed and four sustained injuries in a bomb explosion in Imphal. Birpara, Dec 27 (ANI): Several tribal groups on Saturday have called for shutdown in Birpara area of Alipurduar district of West Bengal following the attacks by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) which killed over 80 people. NDFB militants killed over 80 people in the Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam ths week. Various groups such as All Assam Tea Tribes Student Association, Adivasi Chhatra Sangathan, Akhil Assam Bhojpuri Parishad, All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) and seven other groups had observed Bandh in several areas of Assam even on Friday.
