Japan's Defence Minister says video showing beheading of Japanese journalist 'appears genuine'

Tokyo, Feb 01 (ANI): A video purporting to show the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto by Islamic State militants appears genuine, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said on Sunday. Islamic State militants said on Saturday that they had beheaded Goto, after the failure of international efforts to secure his release through a prisoner swap. The hardline Islamist group released a video which seemed to show the beheaded body of Goto and threatened further attacks on Japanese targets. Japan condemned the actions of the militants and said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet would meet in response to the video, which showed a hooded man standing over Goto with a knife to his throat, followed by footage of a head put on the back of a human body. Meanwhile, Goto's brother said that he was saddened on the loss and that he had hoped to welcome Kenji back to Japan. Feb 1, 2015

Beijing, Feb 01 (ANI): Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is on a three-day visit to China, on Sunday, suggested a six-point template for India and China to build their relations upon and to realise the dream of an 'Asian Century'. Swaraj said that the Indo-China relation has grown beyond bilateral and regional dimension and today covers entire information spectrum. Swaraj who is accompanied on the trip by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, said that India would make it easier for Chinese companies to do business in the country and expect that similar encouragement would be given to Indian companies to expand their business in China. Beijing, Feb 01 (ANI): The second meeting of the India-China Media Forum was jointly inaugurated by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Minister of State Council Information Office of China, Jiang Jianguo in Beijing on Sunday. The two leaders highlighted the increasingly important role of the media in enhancing the understanding about each other in their respective countries. The Chinese Minister called upon the media for an objective reporting and increase coverage on economic cooperation. About 40 journalists, twenty from each side are participating in the Media Forum. Police destroy liquor worth 4 crores in Gujarat

Navsari, Feb 01 (ANI): Police destroyed liquor worth around Rupees 4 crores seized over a period of six months in Gujarat, also proclaimed as a dry state. Police crushed the liquor bottles, brought into an open ground in trucks, using a road roller. Gujarat is the first Indian state to implement total prohibition in 1958 over alcohol consumption. Police recover cocaine from Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko

Kochi, Feb 01 (ANI): Police arrested Malayalam film actor, Shine Tom Chacko along with four others for possession of cocaine in Kochi city of Kerala. The police arrested the five people during a raid at a flat owned by a businessman, Muhammed Nisham. Seven grams of cocaine was recovered from their possession. The other four arrested along with Chacko have been identified as Blessy, an assistant director hailing from Bengaluru and three models-Tincy, Reshma and Sneha. While interrogation, the actor confessed to having received the drugs from Goa. Reportedly, all the five people are to be produced before a session court after police questioning. Kolkata court extends judicial custody of 11 accused in Burdwan blast case

Kolkata, Feb 01 (ANI): Kolkata court extended the judicial custody of 11 people including two women, accused in 2014 Burdwan blast, till February 13. Two operatives of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh were killed in an explosion while preparing homemade bombs in Burdwan district of West Bengal in October last year. The counsel of National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the blast, Shyamal Ghosh said that a bail application has been filed by one of the accused. He added that a petition was also filed by the accused seeking return of items seized from them, a plea that was rejected by the court. Feb 1, 2015

MiG-21 fighter aircraft crashes in Gujarat

Jamnagar, Feb 01 (ANI): A MiG-21 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in Gujarat. An eyewitness, Mahavir said that the crash was result of an explosion. The pilot managed to eject safely with the help of parachute, say villagers. New Delhi/ Kolkata, Feb 01 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested former Congress MP Matang Singh in Kolkata city in connection with Saradha chit fund scam case. The Enforcement Directorate too had reportedly questioned Singh in Delhi earlier. Spokesperson of CBI, Kanchan Prasad said Singh has been booked under the charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. On Friday, CBI had questioned a powerful aide of West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mukul Roy. Roy had so far avoided appearing before the CBI since he was summoned on January 12. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj arrives in China on four-day visit
