Domestic e-commerce major Snapdeal on Tuesday announced the launch of its services in multiple languages, which will enable its customers to shop on its platform in their preferred regional language.

Starting from 15 December, online shoppers can access the Snapdeal site in Hindi and Telugu on the mobile platform.

The online retailer's site will be available in English and in 11 different regional languages by Republic Day on 26 January 2016. The languages in which Snapdeal's user interface will be available include Hindi, Telugu, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese and Punjabi.

Snapdeal is the first ecommerce company in the country to offer multiple regional language interfaces, the company said in a statement.

With this, Snapdeal has expanded its reach to an additional 130 million smartphone users in India, who use the Internet in regional languages, thus making digital commerce now accessible to all, it said.

"India's linguistic diversity is a huge opportunity to expand the market to include those users who would prefer to engage online in their native languages. Our decision to go multi-lingual is driven by the feedback that we have received from our users," said Rohit Bansal, Co-Founder, Snapdeal.

As many of its users choose Hindi and other regional languages to speak to customer care representatives, the multilingual platform enables these customers to shop in their native language, it said.

The platform allows users to pick the language of their choice for browsing, for payments and for order tracking.

The multilingual platform is built on top of Snaplite, Snapdeal's website for the mobile browser, which is 85% lighter and consumes less bandwidth. This means that not only is it in the language of the regions, it also consumes 85% less bandwidth and loads in 1/4th the time of most other mobile sites.
