Samsung Electronics' upcoming flagship smartphone dubbed as the Galaxy S6 will face fierce competition from several counterparts – the most notable being arch-rival Apple iPhone 6 and HTC One (M9).

The South Korean electronics giant is tight-lipped about the release date of Galaxy S6 but it is expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2015, probably at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015) event to be held from 2 to 5 March, 2015.

All eyes are on the Galaxy S6 after its predecessor, Galaxy S5, failed to impress gadget lovers which was reflected in the huge drop in company's earnings for the third quarter of 2014. However, the road ahead of the new device is not going to be easy, as it has to compete with iPhone 6 and HTC One (M9) in the smartphone market.

Apple's iPhone 6 was released along with iPhone 6 Plus a couple of months ago and it is doing good business. The device is expected to go strong till the arrival of its successor next year.

The other device that may give fierce fight to Galaxy S6 is HTC One (M9), which is one of the much-awaited smartphones of 2015. Expectation on HTC's upcoming flagship device is huge following the stupendous success of its predecessors – HTC One and HTC One (M8). Interestingly, the device is expected to be announced at the same time Galaxy S6.

Meanwhile, Galaxy S6 is expected to be a game changer for Samsung with significant upgrades from its predecessors. According to reports, Samsung's upcoming smartphone may sport a 5.5-inch display with a 1440 x 2560 quad HD screen (554ppi) or even a 3840x2160 display resolution. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 or Exynos 7420 processor, run on Android 5.0 Lollipop, and come packed with 32/64/128GB internal memory.

According to a report by Christian Today, the device may have 4GB RAM, a 21MP main camera and 6MP front snapper, and 4000 mAh battery.

Will the Galaxy S6 survive competition from iPhone 6 and HTC One (M9)? Only time will tell.
