With less than a couple of days before the Samsung event kicks-off, a snapshot and key features of the company's much-talked about Galaxy Gear smartwatch have surfaced online.

Technology website Venture Beat has posted the first ever pictures of Galaxy Gear featuring a 3.0-inch display, contradicting earlier reports which claimed that the Samsung smartwatch would sport a 2.5-inch screen.

Going by the image, the watch looks like a badly designed, tiny touch-screen phone strapped to the wrist. The website's source hinted that the device in the snapshot might be a prototype. Chances are high that Samsung's final product may show off a different design during its unveiling as the South Korean company is notorious for maintaining secrecy regarding design details. Another tech blog, Gigaom, has revealed a couple of new features of the upcoming Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The device is said to run on the latest Android mobile OS v4.3 Jelly Bean but lacks a couple of features. The keyboard and browser applications are two which have have been taken off from the OS.

It also revealed that the Samsung smartwatch would indeed run close to 24 hours up on moderate use, which is sure to bring cheers to Samsung fans. Earlier rumours had pointed that the wearable device would only operate for a maximum 10 hours after full charge. Gigaom cautions that if the smartwatch is overly used, battery life is said to be reduced to 10 hours.

Taking stock of previous and latest reports, Galaxy Gear is expected to sport an OLED display with 320x320p resolution and run on customised Android v4.3 Jelly Bean powered by Samsung's in-house built 1.5GHz Exynos 4212 dual-core processor with Mali-400 MP4 graphics engine. The smartwatch will reportedly pack 1GB RAM, 4.0-megapixel camera and is expected to be sold with two storage variants - one as a 6GB model and another as an 8GB model.

Samsung will unveil its first ever wearable device, Galaxy Gear, and the third-generation Galaxy Note at Berlin on 4 September.
