When John Terry took part in training on Monday there was a slight hope the Chelsea captain would be available for the big UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg clash against PSG in Paris, but the former England international will not be risked, after the veteran was forced off with an injury during the Blues' stroll over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Terry damaged his ligaments in a tussle with Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, with manager Guus Hiddink revealing his skipper failed to pass a fitness test, leading to him being left out of the travelling party to Paris.

"Well, it was not a decision made by me," Hiddink told the club's official website. "He was having too much trouble to travel.

"We made a test this morning and it didn't work out well, so the decision was made to leave him at home. He was, himself, also convinced he could not be of worth to the team at the moment.

"He has a bit of a problem on his hamstring and on the tendon in that area. That's why we had the test this morning and we decided he would not participate. It will be difficult to say whether he can play this weekend. That's why we'd prefer him to keep undergoing treatment back at Cobham."

Hiddink, while admitting Terry will be a big miss, will probably go with Branislav Ivanovic in the centre of defence alongside Gary Cahill, considering Kurt Zouma is also out long-term. Cesar Azpilicueta should slot in at right-back with Baba Rahman coming in as the left fullback, much like he did when Terry picked up the injury on Saturday.

"We've practised with other people in at central defence, so it was not a surprise for the players that we had to make some changes," Hiddink added. "Of course, not having John is a bit of a setback. He's a leader. But I'm not the type of coach to moan and moan. We have to go on. The players who will replace him I have complete faith in them."

Chelsea have doubts over the fitness of Oscar, while Nemanja Matic has stayed back in London since the midfielder is suspended from this game.

PSG go into this first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with a bit of drama regarding their team news, after Serge Aurier was suspended by the club for making embarrassing statements regarding manager Laurent Blanc and several of his teammates, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, in an interview on social media. Blanc is expected to go with either Marquinhos or Gregory Van Der Wiel to take the place of Aurier in the right-back position.

Ezequeil Lavezzi is ruled out, while fellow Argentine Javier Pastore is a doubt with a hamstring problem. Marco Verratti, who signed a new contract with PSG until 2020, is in danger of missing the second leg, if he picks up a yellow card in this first leg fixture. There is no such danger for any of the Chelsea players.

Expected lineups: PSG: Trapp; Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Maxwell; Rabiot, Motta, Matuidi; Di Maria, Ibrahimovic, Cavani.

Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Rahman; Mikel, Fabregas; Pedro, Willian, Hazard; Costa.
