Actress Mallika Sherawat's recent interview in which she called India 'regressive' with deplorable conditions of women has evoked outrage from many celebrities.

Recently, south actress Malvika Avinash lashed out at the "Murder" star's insensitive belittling comments about India on an international platform like Cannes.

The enraged Kannada actress tweeted, "I may be at the bottom of the ladder but I can still reach out and slap Mallika Sherawat across the face! May I?"

Limelight-hungry Poonam Pandey also lunged at Mallika via the social networking site .

"Malika went to #Cannes and got carried away with the media attention. She's not used to it na...."The 'Nasha' actress posted.

"Malika should not bite the hand that has been feeding her. I love #India."

Bollywood A-list actress Priyanka Chopra was the first to speak out against Mallika's 'highly offending' interview.

"When it comes to Mallika's statements, I think they were very callous and I don't agree with her. It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don't think it's fair," she had said.

"I think we are a progressive nation. I disagree that we are a regressive nation. We are all sitting here and talking about educating the girl child, taking our country forward. I think it's a misrepresentation of what our great nation is on the world platform."

Despite the outpour of criticism, Mallika remained unfazed and was defensive of her interview. "I said Whats happening to women in India is regressive and depressing and I stand by it # RAPE," she had said.

An earlier tweet from the 37-year-old said, "Need New Haters, old ones are beginning to like me."

Mallika was also slammed for her fake accent and grammatically incoherent statements on India, the state of women and her upcoming film "Dirty Politics" which was even claimed to be a lie.
