The Centre's announcement on Bharat Ratna awards comes a day ahead of the veteran BJP leader's birthday, which falls on December 25. Haryana govt distributes blankets as cold wave tightens grip

New Delhi/ Amritsar, Dec 24 (ANI): Government in Haryana distributed blankets to poor people living on road on Wednesday as cold wave tightened its grip, forcing people to sit around bonfires and staying indoors. As per local media reports, minimum temperature recorded in Haryana was 2.5 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh city recorded 5.8 degrees Celsius. Yadav also requested people to distribute their warm clothes to needy. Meanwhile, people in New Delhi also shivered under cold weather condition. The minimum temperature recorded was six degrees coupled with dense fog. In Amritsar city, dense fog disrupted normal life as it reduced visibility. Dhaka, Dec 24 (ANI): A former junior minister in Bangladeshi military government was sentenced to death after war crimes tribunal found him guilty of atrocities during the country's war of independence from Pakistan more than four decades ago. Syed Mohammad Qaisar, 73, was found guilty of 14 out of 16 charges including genocide, rape, extortion, arson and torture committed during the 1971 war, prosecutors said. State prosecutor Tureen Afroz told reporters outside the closely guarded court, after the verdict that wounds of rape are greater than wounds of bullets. Qaisar denied the charges and his lawyer, Syed Mohammad Shahjahan said his client would appeal as he didn't get proper judgment. Assam, Dec 24 (ANI): Suspected tribal militants killed at least 40 people, including women and children, in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. Police suspect militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were behind four attacks that took place on Tuesday within the space of an hour. Formed in 1998, NDFB signed a ceasefire with the government in May 2005, but some of its factions continue to indulge in militancy. Villagers who fled the carnage told police that the rebels came on foot, armed with assault rifles and wearing military uniforms. They forced open the doors of their thatched huts and opened fire.
