Two Catholics from Kerala declared saints in Vatican

Thrissur, Nov 23 (ANI): Masses came out on streets of Kerala on Sunday after a Carmelite priest, Chavara Elias Kuriakose, and a Carmelite nun, Euphrasia Eluvathingal, from the state were declared as saints in Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City by Pope Francis. The news has elated the Christian community in Kerala as it is for the first time that two Indians are declared as saints on the same day. People from far flung areas are rushing to a chapel in a small village of Ollur, the burial place of Euphrasia, near Thrissur district to have a glimpse of her. Scores of Indian priests, nuns and devotees thronged Vatican to witness the canonisation function. Madhuri Dixit, UNICEF brand ambassador, dedicates Literature Carnival in Lucknow to Child Rights

Lucknow, Nov 23 (ANI): With UNICEF celebrating 25 years of its Convention on the Rights of the Child, brand ambassador, Madhuri Dixit recently dedicated the Lucknow Literature Carnival to children in Lucknow. At an event, Dixit also addressed child sexual abuse, bullying, child labour, sanitation and health issues. The carnival, a three-day event, organized by Lucknow Expressions Society is scheduled to start from November 28 and will culminate on November 30. Lucknow Literature carnival is conducted on the lines of the Jaipur Literature Festival and would include book launches, literary readings, workshops, screenings and cultural performances. Cake mixing ceremony in Vishakhapatnam heralds advent of Christmas spirit

Visakhapatnam, Nov 23 (ANI): Christmas and New Year celebrations began with the cake mixing ceremony as 150 kilograms of dry fruits were mixed with 24 litres of the finest spirits in The Gateway Hotel in Vishakhapatnam. At the hotel's lobby, scores of visitors participated in the annual ritual and enthusiastically arranged and mixed the colourful dry fruit with rum, vodka, brandy and other spirits. Chef Sarat Chandra Bannerjee said that this was organised to resume normal life after cyclone Hudhud struck the city in October. Meanwhile, tourists from Russia who participated in the ceremony said they thoroughly enjoyed participating in such a unique ceremony. Crowd throngs wine festival in Nagpur

Nagpur, Nov 23 (ANI): The Nagpur Wine and Food Festival- 2014 being held in Nagpur not only promised a treat to a variety of wines presented by famous brands but also aimed at creating awareness to remove the misconceptions that people hold regarding the drink. The two- day festival has been organized by Nagpur Wine Lovers Club with the help of Indian Grapes Processing Board, All India Wine Manufacturing Association, Nasik Valley Wine Club and Indo-Israel Agricultural Organization. Eight famous wine brands of the country participated in the festival, out of which the wine from Nasik was the most popular and highly demanded. Japan hit by 6.8 magnitude earthquake leaving houses collapsed and injuring many people

Japan, Nov 23 (ANI): An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted central Japan on Saturday evening, temporarily trapping people in collapsed homes and leaving at least 39 people injured, police said. The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was issued after the quake, which was felt in capital Tokyo around 180 km away. The hardest-hit area appeared to be Hakuba village, which hosted events in the 1998 games. Many homes were lost in Otari, a nearby village to the north. Non-residential buildings were also destroyed, with officials still assessing the extent. Meanwhile, residents began going through the rubble and cleaning up their damaged homes after the overnight earthquake collapsed houses and triggered landslides. Shortest cow of Kerala gets place in Guinness Book of World Records

Kozhikode, Nov 23 (ANI): Onlookers thronged the Kerala for a glimpse of the shortest cow in the world whose photographs will soon be logged in the Guinness Book of World Records. The five-member Guinness Book of World Records team came to Kerala to click photographs of the indigenous cow of 'Vechur' breed and declared Manikyam to be the world's shortest cow. The six-year-old Manikyam, who measurers 61.5 centimeters from the hoof to the withers would replace the 69.07 centimeter Blaze, the current holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for the shortest cow from United States. Villagers clicked pictures of Manikyam with their mobile phones, who stood decked with garlands around her neck and posed with another Guinness record holder for shortest actor Ajay Kumar.
