College students in Bihar observe Human Rights Day

Patna, Dec 10 (ANI): Students of a women's college in Bihar formed a human chain on Wednesday (December 10) on the occasion of Human Rights Day. Students held banners and placards to raise awareness about human rights and endorsed the significance of the day. Human Rights Day is a United Nations (UN) endeavor to end discrimination and uplift the global human rights conditions. It was on this day in 1948, that the General Assembly of the UN had adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. December 10 marks Human Rights Day, the 66th anniversary of the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), signed by 48 nations - with just eight abstentions. Dec 10, 2014

Politicos on government removing section 309 from IPC

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): The Home Ministry on Wednesday informed Parliament that the government has decided to delete section 309 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises attempt to suicide. The Centre also said that 18 states and four union territories have supported deleting Sec 309. The move was recommended by the Law Commission along with amendment of certain other sections of the CrPC and IPC in consultation with all stake holders. Many politicos backed the decision. New Delhi, Dec10 (ANI): The Narendra Modi government is thinking to confer the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. According to reports, a formal announcement in this regard is expected to be put in public domain on December 25 when the nation will celebrate Vajpaye's leader's 90th birthday. As per the reports available, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, which was voted to power this May, may bestow its first Bharat Ratna on Vajpayee on January 26 next year. Reacting over this veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said that no one deserves Bharat Ratna more than Vajpayee. Mathura MP and former Bollywood actress, Hema Malini, also echoed similar views. Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete said that his party wants Bharat Ratna to be awarded to the former prime minister. New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday further extended the stay on the execution of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, lone death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The court issued notices to STF Maharashtra and CBI on Memon's plea seeking review of death penalty in the blasts case. The court had on March 21, 2013, upheld the death sentence of Memon. Kullu, Dec 10 (ANI): A 17th century idol of Lord Raghunath, worth crores of rupees was stolen from a temple located on the premises of Kullu Palace in Kullu town's busy Sultanpur locality. It was in wee hours that temple priests Pappu and Hemraj noticed the missing idol and immediately informed Dhanvender Singh, son of Maheshwar Singh-- who is the principal guardian of the deity. The idol made of pure gold, which measured a little more than three inches, was removed from the shrine on the intervening night of December 08 and December 09. Burglars also took away the idols of Lord Ganesha, Hanuman, Narsangh and Salig Ram from the temple along with some silver and gold ornaments.
